Those who jump on breakfast have the arteries that age earlier

This bad habit in the morning indicates an improper lifestyle that “weighs” on the heart.

In the morning it is not always easy to carve for ten minutes of serenity to make a real breakfast. The alarm that does not ring, the shirt to be worn, the children to take to school, the notes to be rested in view of a major work appointment. That’s a bit of a 30-second net for a coffee on the fly while standing on the jacket. Bad, in fact, very bad. Those who jump over breakfast have the arteries that age before time. This is shown by a study conducted in the United States, and published in Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC).

The survey

The researchers selected 4000 peoples of both sexes between the ages of 40 and 54 who did not exhibit any cardiovascular or chronic kidney disease. These volunteers have undergone a series of clinical examinations and were then questioned about their eating habits through a simple computer questionnaire. Only 27.7% of the sample said they had breakfast regularly, consuming at least 20% of their daily calories. 69.4% said they had something to go out of their home empty stomach, remaining below 20% of their daily calories. Finally, 2.9% of respondents agreed to skip breakfast or drink only coffee or juice.

Aged arteries

By crossing the answers given in the questionnaires with the exam reports, it turned out that “breakfast jumpers” have arteries that age before time, with stiffer walls and plaque accumulation, the classic signs of atherosclerosis. Their cardio metabolic risk is higher because they usually have other factors that “weigh” on heart health. We are talking about hypertension, a high body mass index, a wider waist circumference, blood glucose and fat in the blood than the standard. Similar conditions, but slightly less serious, have also been found in people accustomed to having a spartan breakfast.

Breakfast “spy” of lifestyle

“In addition to the direct link with these cardiovascular risk factors,” says coordinator of the study, Jose L. Penalvo, “the breakfast jump is also an alarm bell that signals a diet and an unhealthy lifestyle.” Those who jump in the breakfast tend to care less about their own food, and often have bad habits like smoking and frequent drinking of alcohol.

There is a change in habits

“20-30% of adults jump over breakfast. This trend reflects the growing spread of problems such as obesity and cardiometabolic disorders, “commented Prakash Deedwania, a professor of medicine at the University of California at San Francisco. “The wrong food choices are often made at a young age, and if they remain unchanged,” adds the expert, “they can favor the onset of cardiovascular disease over time. The adverse effects of breakfast jump can already be observed in childhood in the form of obesity and, although many of those who jump do it just to eat less and lose weight, they actually end up eating more by consuming more unhealthy foods. Not having breakfast can unbalanced hormonal balance and alter the pace of the biological clock. That breakfast is the most important meal of the day has been shown in the light of this consideration.”
