5 Tips for Staying Healthy While You’re Away at College

Whether you are going to UC Davis or getting ACU’s masters in conflict resolution online, you want to avoid that dreaded “freshman 15.” The truth of the matter is that college can drastically change your lifestyle. While you may have eaten lean and healthy at home with the folks – now that you are in college, you are forced to eat what you can afford or you may give into your cravings entirely. However, it doesn’t have to be this way – you can still make healthy choices in college, so that you stay fit and trim. Here are five tips for staying health while you are away at college.

  1. Workout for at Least Twenty to Thirty Minutes a Day

One of the best ways to stay healthy in college is to get exercise. Ideally, you want to exercise every single day. If you don’t have a gym on campus, you could run around the quad, or you can install a workout bar in your dorm.

If you have a car, you may rely on driving to class everyday – even if your class is only five minutes away. To avoid this and to get some exercise, you may want to walk. If you are feeling up to it, you could even run. Indeed, it is easy to become really lazy in college, so you want to find ways to boost how active you are. If you have a bike, you could even get around on two wheels – riding a bike is good for you and it is also really fun.

  1. Keep Healthy Snacks Around Instead of Junk Food

Most college students keep snacks in their dorm. If you are keeping snacks in your dorm, you want to make sure they are healthy snacks. For instance, you may want to keep some hummus or even some almonds. When you get hungry, you can snack on nutritionally dense foods instead of candy bars or food that is rich in fats. If you are munching on potato chips all day, this is a surefire way to gain that “freshman 15.”

  1. Don’t Go for Seconds at the Cafeteria

After you are done with breakfast, lunch or dinner, you don’t want to go back in for seconds. You may only want to have a light dessert. If you train yourself to eat seconds, you will only open up room for more, which will create a vicious cycle. Also, you want to keep your portions light when you do pile food onto your plate – cafeteria food tends to be more fattening than it appears.

  1. Drink Plenty of Water to Stay Hydrated

On top of everything, you want to keep a bottle of water on you at all times – it is critical to stay hydrated. If you don’t stay hydrated, you won’t feel healthy and energized. Of course, you don’t want to use a plastic bottle – you want to use a glass bottle because it is better for environment.
